Since then a detailed building structural inspection by independent surveyors has been completed which has revealed worse than expected damage. The Regent was built as a theatre in 1928 when it was known as the New Pavilion. It became a cinema in 1960. Independent building surveyors Billinghurst George and Partners found defects to the roof, floor and walls of the building. This comprised of 3 major vertical cracks on the north wall facing the sea. An extension exposed to the sea appears to be pulling away from the main cinema hall. Significant weather damage to the main roof including corrosion to the metal beams. Ceiling boards in a poor condition liable to fall in the auditorium. Corrosion in steelwork to the stage with timber propping not securely fixed, cracking to the various interior walls. The council owns the building and is the landlord. The Regent Cinema is not listed with the frame of the building been the original pier known as the Glasshouse. The cinema remains a fully independent business.

CURRENT SALTBURN PLANNING APPLICATIONS

THE VICTORIA P.H. DUNDAS ST EAST.
The display appeared on the Pier on Saturday morning and has already attracted praise from visitors.

Among the knitted figures is Dracula, no stranger to the Yorkshire coastline from his days in Whitby. You'll also find Wally enjoying the sunshine alongside Hannah Hauxwell and Robinson Crusoe. Even the bard himself seems to have decided on a seaside holiday jaunt for inspiration.

There's even a cheeky woollen reference to the popular erotic thriller 50 Shades of Grey alongside a Mills and Boon heart. All of the characters seem to be enjoying the sunshine and living the Life of Pi.

Seasalthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06999722443629204532noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26604614.post-90210298063484480652018-07-04T18:35:00.001+01:002018-07-05T17:08:07.016+01:00Doggy Day Care at Saltburn Food Festival
Everybody and their dog will be heading to the coast for the mouth-watering Saltburn Food Festival on Sunday July 29.

And organisers would like to remind people that if they find themselves at the festival with their four-legged friends there are lots of options to ensure they don’t get crushed in the crowds.

They’ve been working with several dog-friendly businesses on the festival fringe to ensure you can enjoy the day without taking your pet into the centre of the site.

Plans include a doggy chill out zone, a walking and boarding service and even a hotel selling non-alcoholic beer brewed locally especially for thirsty consumers of the four-legged variety.

The idea is that dog lovers can feast to their hearts’ content, sampling the delights of the festival while their faithful friends enjoy some exercise or whine and dine in more suitable surroundings.

Organiser Lorna Jackson explained: “A food festival is a really bad environment for a dog, with all the people and the noise – not to mention the delicious hot food being eaten all around them.

“I’m a dog owner myself and I certainly wouldn’t take my Dalmatian, Lily, in among those crowds. But we do want everyone to enjoy the day with us and we’ve come up with some great ideas to help dog owners who can’t simply leave their pets at home.”

Milo’s Café owner Janet Dalton with Milo, her sausage dog, Star Paws’ Redcar manager Sammy-Jo Parker, food festival co-coordinator Alison Nelson with her springer spaniel, Max, and festival organiser Lorna Jackson with her Dalmatian, Lily, an RSPCA rescue dog.

The chill out zone is in Station Street’s Destinations café, which is currently in the process of being rebranded as Milo’s dog-friendly café.

The café’s new owner, dog groomer Janet Dalton, hopes family members and friends will take turns looking after their pet and trying out their own special festival menu, while the others head off to the heart of the festival.

“You don’t need a dog to come in but if you have one you’re very welcome,” says Janet. “Last year I came to the festival as a customer and noticed a lot of people had dogs in among the very large crowds. Don’t forget though it can be a dangerous and unforgiving place for the unwary – check tides, look at local information about currents. But people do get caught out. That’s why we’ve got your back. As we head to the summer holidays we want to remind people to stay safe when they visit the North Yorkshire coast. The beach is a great place to visit and relax during your time off but we urge people to be aware of the dangers."

"Our advice is to always swim at a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags. The annual list combines data and statistics such as crime rates, house prices and school performance with local knowledge and expertise. The locations were selected for offering the best quality of life to the widest number of people, and combining desirable features such as a positive community spirit, good local shops and services and attractive outdoor spaces.

And among the things picked out as highlights are the Seaview Restaurant, the “elegant” pier, transport links and school.

Here’s what The Times has to say.

“This grand slice of posh Victorian seaside resort.

“It’s got a lot more going for it than its old nickname, Darlington on Sea, suggests. There’s surfing and a wide, sandy beach, earning it a reputation as the Newquay of the north. But it also has all the trappings of the classic British seaside, including an elegant pier (the most northerly in Britain), a water-powered cliff lift (the oldest in Britain) and a miniature railway.

"The seafront has been tidied up over the past few years, and there are plans to bring in “luxury” beach huts for the summer."

"Saltburn is famous for the fish and chips at the Seaview Restaurant (£10.50 for cod, chips and a glorious view), but new businesses are popping up all the time, with a florist, a microbrewery and an interiors shop opening in the past six months. There’s a weekly farmers’ market and an annual food fair, and the lively town centre is full of art galleries, antiques shops and jewellery stores. It’s a reminder that the town’s advantages stretch beyond the beach."

"Huntcliff, the local secondary school, gets a solid good from Ofsted, and there are trains to Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Darlington. If that wasn’t enough, Saltburn has a surprise up its sleeve: a 'secret knitting society', the Yarnbombers, emerge under cover of darkness to decorate the pier with huge displays of woolly toys and sculptures."

Seasalthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06999722443629204532noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26604614.post-28515811399343857712017-03-22T14:51:00.001+00:002017-03-22T14:51:39.685+00:00East Cleveland Klondike Cycle Grand Prix
The biggest teams and riders will descend upon East Cleveland on the 2nd April for what will become an early season classic!

East Cleveland Villages BIG Local has commissioned a Spring Elite Cycling Grand Prix to be part of British Cycling Series Cup to be raced through East Cleveland, on Sunday 2nd April 2017. Fillet. Feast! event on Saturday 18 June will include an array of activities for all ages across 10 locations between Saltburn and Ravenscar. Villages such as Runswick Bay, Sandsend and Robin Hood’s Bay are taking part and so too is Staithes, which was the largest fishing port along the North East coast of England back in the late 1800s.

The day, which is being organised by Scarborough-based arts development company Create on behalf of the North York Moors National Park Authority, begins early in the morning when local fishermen will venture out to sea to bring back the day’s catch.

From mid-morning onwards chefs at various seafront venues, including Lorna Jackson of Real Meals Delicatessen in Saltburn and former seafood chef of the year Rob Green, will share with visitors how to prepare and cook the freshly-caught fish before serving visitors with free tastings of barbecued morsels.

A string of restaurants along the coast such as Cleveland Corner Bistro in Staithes, the Cliffemount Hotel at Runswick Bay and Dunsley Hall near Sandsend will also be serving special, affordable fish dishes to mark the occasion.

The day’s entertainment continues with storytellers sharing fishy tales, interactive performances such as the fortune-telling Salmon of Knowledge, sea shanties and folk music, and opportunities for visitors to knit, paint, sketch or print their own fish design.

Visitors can also browse the numerous art galleries and studios showcasing the talent of local artists and craftsmen.

Creative fish-themed photography that has been produced by pupils at Saltburn Primary School, Seton Community Primary School in Staithes and Fylingdales Church of England Primary School in Robin Hood’s Bay will be on display, following a series of workshops held by photographer Tony Bartholomew.

In Robin Hood’s Bay youngsters will be invited to enter a ‘name the fish’ competition for the newly-restored cast iron sculpture that will be unveiled at 11am and will take pride of place on the slipway of the Old Coastguard Station.

Standing 1.2 metres high, The Fish is Grade ll listed and has never been named despite being the oldest known RNLI donation box dating back to 1886. The North York Moors National Park Authority has funded the latest restoration through the Coastal Communities Fund after the feature had been eroded by the sea air and high tides.

Wendy Holroyd, director of Create comments: “Our shores are home to a rich variety of sea life and the day will be a celebration of this, opening people’s eyes to the ways that fishing has influenced the coastline over the centuries and the simple pleasures of eating freshly caught and cooked fish.

“With so many coastal spots participating, it will be easy for visitors to stop off at several places and enjoy the entertainment in fantastic atmospheric surroundings.”

The day runs from 11am until 7pm and most of the events will be free of charge. Timings of events varies and there are different activities happening in each village.

The full programme and further details can be found on the North York Moors National Park’s website: www.northyorkmoors.org.uk/fish

The programme is also available to pick up from National Park Centres at Danby and Sutton Bank, and at tourist offices, holiday parks, museums, galleries, libraries and businesses across the region.
Seasalthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06999722443629204532noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26604614.post-86193822617889363712016-05-27T15:20:00.002+01:002016-05-27T15:20:54.081+01:00All stitched up.
Celebrating Yorkshire.
Guerrilla knitters stitch up Saltburn Pier. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Northumbrian Water’s Branch Out Fund, the two year project aims to establish an understanding of bat populations and distribution in the East Cleveland area. By running local bat events, the project will engage with local communities and encourage the development of village batscapes to create an understanding and appreciation of bats of the local area, which we know so little about. The project launch is in Loftus on the 16th of May, see below for details.

Sarah is very excited about her new role and the project she will be undertaking within the local community. Sarah is from Redcar, but has lived in Moorsholm and Marske. She can often be spotted on the road with her red car with lady bird spots. Her interest in bats stemmed from her experience in bioacoustics, the study of animal communication by sound. Sarah has been working with whales and dolphins all around the world for the past sixteen years and is a marine mammal medic for the Cleveland area. Wanting to be closer to home, to learn more about our amazing wildlife here in Cleveland and to enthuse others, Sarah was thrilled when she was offered the position of Bat Officer. Friends and colleagues have dropped many suggestions that she should have her own bat costume, which she may be coming round to the idea of.

“Bats are cryptic animals that hunt at night so are totally overlooked, but thanks to this new project being launched in the East Cleveland area, bats are at last to be celebrated. Whilst not always considered to be the cutest of animals, bats are a vital part of our ecosystem. Sadly bat populations in the UK have suffered severe declines in the last few decades. For this reason, all bats and their roosts are protected by law. One of the main reasons for their decline is a loss of important habitat for them – woodland, hedgerows and buildings they may have been roosting in. Their declining numbers flag up an urgent need to understand them better before it is too late, and it is important that this knowledge is shared with local communities in order to protect them“ said Sarah.

Small but perfectly formed
“These small but perfectly formed creatures are definitely misunderstood. There are many misconceptions about bats, which we hope to dispel at our events. Lots of people squirm at the thought of a bat, or panic if a bat gets too close, but they shouldn’t. The bats we have in the UK are insectivores, so they only eat insects. This includes up to 3000 midges in one night! So ironically, they actually eat the little critters that suck blood from you. Bats of the UK are shy and are more frightened of you than you are of them. They have been known in the past as flying mice. However, humans are actually genetically closer to mice than bats are! Bats also are very clean animals and spend many hours grooming” said Sarah.

The wooded nature and rural character of the East Cleveland Batscape area gives it the potential to be important for more than eight species of bat, but there are very few records. The project will encourage people to help collect data by loaning special bat recorders to find out if they have bats in their back yard and the wider countryside to build up a picture of our local batscape. It is a unique opportunity to experience unusual wildlife encounters on a local patch. Sarah will provide advice on how to use these bat detectors and the best places to use them to gain recordings.

Unique bat talk and walk will launch the project
Wildlife lovers are being asked to turn up in force to count the range of bat species that are emerging in the town of Loftus. This event is open to nature lovers of any age and will go on until dusk in a bid to observe bats that appear in the evening.

The launch of the East Cleveland Batscape project will involve a talk on bats and how to go about detecting them. The talk will also involve a little on why bats are important and some quirky facts that will interest all ages. Echolocation calls will be played so that people know what to listen out for during a bat walk. The bat walk will involve going outside with bat detectors to see what is flying around as bats emerge for feeding as the sun goes down.
At the launch, and throughout the project, Sarah hopes people will learn to love bats and discover their importance in our landscape.

Sarah said: “We want as many people to get involved as possible. We’ll be running bat talks and walks to identify different bat species, asking for volunteers to take part in surveys and field work and undertaking children’s events to educate the next generation about why bats are special, unique and important to our natural heritage. We hope that getting people involved, in the long term, will contribute to their conservation”.

Saturday 16th of May. Loftus. The old Co-op building. 7:30.
This event is free and suitable for children. The bat walk will be relatively easy, but the route will include some uneven path. The talk will last around 20 minutes and the walk around 30 to 40 minutes. The walk will be followed by some hot soup and to have a chat about the bats that have been seen and heard. It is recommended to bring a torch and wrap up warm.
There will be further events over the next two years throughout the project so keep an eye on the Coastal View for more information. “We really hope to see you at one of our events to help us with this new fascinating programme that you can all become involved with” said Sarah.

To find out more about events or how you can become involved in the East Cleveland Batscape contact:
Sarah Barry, Bat Officer, Tees Valley Wildlife Trust on 01287 636382
sbarry@teeswildlife.org
http://www.teeswildlife.org/what-we-do/safeguarding-wildlife-and-the-natural-environment/cleveland-batscape/

As part of the Redcar and Cleveland walking festival there will be a “winged wildlife of the Tees Valley” walk at Coatham Marsh in Redcar on the 21st of June.
