It may be just a shadow of its former self but Saltburn Pier continues to defy the elements and celebrations are now being planned for its 150th birthday.
Redcar and Cleveland Council has agreed on plans to light-up one of the borough’s most recognisable landmarks in celebration of its one and a half century history.
The Economic Growth Scrutiny and Improvement Committee discussed the plans to illuminate Saltburn Pier in May next year.
The council’s Area Growth Plans update report said: "This is a project to restore the feature lighting to the Grade 2 listed pier."
"Surveys will be undertaken in the coming months to look at options for how the lighting can be installed to ensure that it can be maintained successfully and withstand extreme conditions."
"Discussions have been undertaken with the PFI lighting contractor to understand how this could be delivered by them.”
It added: “The aim is for the project to be completed in 2019 to coincide with the pier’s 150th birthday in May 2019.”
The project will now be developed further to identify the costs of delivery and maintenance before work commences on site.
